Parent and Student Testimonials
We've tried several chess classes before this, and this is absolutely the best, the most professional.
KLC classes are uniquely arranged. Each level has a non-fixed number of semesters, and the students may be admitted to the next level, depending on their own progress. There are classes to build foundations, and for special topics, also classes offered by other chess masters, who share different perspectives. Students showing great talent will be selected to more elite classes. In this way, students are encouraged to learn proactively and diversely. Ms Kiki is not only professional/amazing in the chess domain, but also in management.
KLC teaching/content is very solid. There's a wide range of topics, and by my daughter - Ms Kiki's teaching is very clear, on-the-point, and keeping in mind the big picture. Thus it has always been one of my daughter's favorite classes. There's good amount of homework after each class (6 puzzles), and a final exam at the end of each semester. Ms Kiki is very responsible and responsive to review the homework, and always gives prompt feedback.
KLC also offers many activities, such as weekly chess[.]com tournament, zhisai tournament. The practices are fun and important. KLC also helps the students to participate and prepare for various chess competitions. They've built the community to allow parents/kids help each other. It's like a big family, and everything is very transparent. Many kids in KLC rank top nationally - they are great learning examples.
We highly recommend KLC!

Retrospectives on 2021 North American Youth Chess Championship
In the North American Youth Chess Championship held in Chicago during Aug 16 - 21, 2021, my son Luke Hong was honored to win first place in U8 Open, and was the only player in that section with 0 losses. I am writing this essay to commemorate that occasion, and also express our sincere gratitude for Coach Kiki and her team in KLC Chess.
Luke Hong started studying chess at the age of 6. Thanks to Coach Liu from Palo Alto, Luke built a foundation on the basic chess playing principles and openings. After winning a CA state championship in K-section in 2019, unfortunately he struggled quite a bit in staying motivated and productive in chess study at home since Covid in 2020. As his father, I also struggled in supporting him effectively.
In June 2021, we decided for Luke to resume his participation in in-person chess tournaments, and started studying with Coach Kiki. Coach Kiki’s strong reputation precedes her -- We’ve been hearing a lot of good words about her club from various friends in the chess community, and are glad to finally get to connect with her.
What an eye opening and positive experience this has been! Just when we felt clueless and a bit hopeless in the pursuit of chess study, Coach Kiki’s mindset, methodology and inspiration served as a shining beacon that lit up the path forward for us.
First, Coach Kiki puts a large emphasis in building a community of chess parents and kids, where the young players get to make friends with one another, have fun, and also prod each other to grow through a benevolent form of peer pressure. Coach Kiki rightly pointed out that for a chess player, especially a young player, the feeling of being part of a community is critical, in helping the player stay informed, oriented and motivated. In hindsight, one mistake we made in 2020 was to overly rely on 1:1 coaching as well as online chess games against players who we do not know of. Once Luke started attending the group lessons taught by Coach Kiki, he showed visible improvements in his level of motivation and engagement.
Second, Coach Kiki suggested clear goals for Luke, and provided effective guidance on how to achieve them. For example, before working with Coach Kiki, Luke’s tactics performance has been at a plateau for a long while, and he seemed to lack the motivation, confidence and knowhow in making further improvements. Coach Kiki was able to address these challenges by referring to some other fellow student’s cases, describing their tactics performance in relation to their USCF ratings, as well as sharing some techniques in making further improvements. Coach Kiki also challenged Luke to hit a certain level within 1 month. In the end, Luke achieved that goal in ~5 weeks, and that has been some of the best chess training experiences he’s gone through so far.
Whatever you set out to do, do your best. -- Coach Kiki
Last but not least, Coach Kiki inspires the chess players and parents. Her chess knowledge, teaching techniques and track record are well known to be top notch. On top of that, in my view, what truly differentiates a great coach such as her and a good coach is the ability to inspire. She speaks plainly of the limitations / weaknesses of Luke, where and how to improve, and her coaching is always wrapped and expressed with care, kindness and hope. As such, Luke wants to do better and make his coach proud. I want to do so as well.
Coach Kiki’s support for chess parents and players during the Chicago tournament has also been nothing short of amazing. Although she couldn’t travel with us due to family constraints, she has been emotionally and spiritually with us for the span of the entire tournament. She offered numerous insightful pieces of advice. For example, she advised the parents to avoid imposing too much pressure on the players, and yet show the kids that we do care, and we are “together in the fight with them”. With her coaching for us across mindset, logistics and chess game preparation, I felt the players in her club were able to enter the tournament games with an overwhelming advantage.
Even though Luke has been studying with Coach Kiki for only ~2 months, the impact that Coach Kiki’s teachings had on him, and the corresponding changes in his mindset, study habits and motivation, cannot be simply measured by the number of classes he has attended or the duration of time. We are deeply grateful for having met with and being able to work with Coach Kiki. The journey has just begun; we look forward to continuing on the stimulating and rewarding path of chess study with her and her club.

Congratulations to King’s Land Chess for eight strong years! Mrs. Kiki and Mr. Leo have been tireless in their efforts to cultivate chess growth. As a student of Mrs. Kiki’s for almost two years, I have been amazed by how much energy she dedicates to teaching chess. She prepares opening theory, middlegame and endgame worksheets, and plenty of instructive games to share in each class. She has nurtured my love for the game, and I have truly grown as a chess player under her tutelage. This is why first and foremost, my thanks goes to her.
As a more matured chess player, I would like to give some tips to King’s Land Chess’s younger students. For starters, the absolute most important thing is to love chess. Secondly, it is important to always try to improve your game, no matter how small the improvements are, because going forward is always better than going back. Then again, it must be known that improvement never comes easy. As long as you keep going, however, there will always be a moment of breakthrough! Lastly, chess is a somewhat fair game, in the sense that as long as you work hard on your own self-improvement, your true rating and your true results should come naturally. Therefore, it is always crucial to play for self-improvement, not for rating.
Let’s go onward to more excellent years with King’s Land Chess!

Absolutely love Ms Kiki's coaching! My older kid was one of the first kids to join her when she just started her school in bay area. We loved her coaching style from the very beginning. She makes sure her kids understand the concepts well, balancing between being too strict and making it fun to learn chess. She pays equal attention to all the kids, she takes time to talk to parents suggesting books, suggesting concepts they should reinforce. There is a difference when a teacher does it as a job versus who do it out of passion. Ms Kiki is very passionate about chess and about teaching it to kids. Both my kids are now enrolled in King's Land Chess. We absolutely recommend the school and all of it coaches.
My son has been in KLC since 2019 with almost zero chess knowledge. He loved Miss Kiki's chess class and improved very quickly. Later he was so lucky to be able to join Miss Kiki's Elite group, which aims at helping kids to become the top player in his/her age in short time. With Miss Kiki's great experience, my son achieved 1600+ online rating within 2 years. Strongly recommend.
We signed up for our 5 year old the moment we knew an entry level class would open to enroll for the year. That’s how we love this chess school and how we would recommend it to others. My older one, now 7 year old, has been in Ms Kiki and Mr Leo’s chess class for over two years now, she has been to chess tournaments sitting with hundreds of kids, won medals/ trophy for herself and helped win several big trophies as a team for her King’s land chess. King’s land chess definitely is the go to place to guide your child learn and enjoy the game!
My kid entered KLC Elite group 8 month ago. We have Zoom Class twice a week. Even in a online learning setting, he achieved a lot with the help from coach Ms Kiki and loves her coaching style so much. He TRIPLED his USCF online rating since then. Now his near term goal is to be the top USCF rating (>1900) U7 and works hard towards it. I can’t imagine all of this without Ms Kiki. Highly Recommend!
Ms. Kiki is an outstanding chess coach with profound knowledge of chess openings, tactics, and teaching skills. She is passionate and enthusiastic about teaching chess, and she knows the most effective ways to motivate the kids. The passion of Ms. Kiki is not only for her students but also for the contents she teaches. My two sons have been learning from Ms. Kiki for several years. Their chess knowledge and ratings have improved tremendously. I would recommend everyone who is serious about improving the chess skills of his/her kids to work with Ms. Kiki.
Coach Kiki is a very experienced and highly competent trainer. My son (7 yo) has studied in Coach Kiki's class for just 3 month and I can see the huge improvement he had in his skills. Coach Kiki loves the kids in her class and uses various methods to accelerate the learning process. My son loves to go to Coach Kiki's class, he also always wants to play chess at home since he started in Coach Kiki's class. We are very thankful for Coach Kiki's hard and ingenious work.
Our daughter began learning chess at age 5 with Kiki and Leo last year and they equipped her in a very short time with the skill and strategies to compete at a very high level in both tournaments and casual matches, as well as a new confidence and an ability to think tactically and strategically that have carried over into her academic and daily life. It is especially impressive because none of the rest of us in the family even knew how to play chess before our daughter began with King's Land Chess. In addition to being excellent teachers, Kiki and Leo are kind, generous, and available to support the development of chess in our local school and to answer our daughter's chess questions whenever they arise. We are fortunate to have found King's Land Chess and come to know Kiki and Leo, and we recommend them to others, including many of our family's friends, whenever we can.
My kids have been training with Coach Kiki and Coach Leo for almost 3 years, all the way from absolute beginners to competitive chess players. They've really enjoyed the chess class here. The coaches are extremely patient and caring, and always make class time fun and engaging. They spend tons of time help each student polish their skills and achieve. Classes are online during covid so that kids are able to continue learning and practicing even in a pandemic. It's a great club for everyone who loves chess!
It is my pleasure to have my 7 years daughter join in KLC’s online chess class. My daughter has been studying chess at KLC for 8 months. She really likes Ms. Kiki's class, and she is happy every time she attends class. We live in Seattle and my daughter takes Ms Kiki’s class via Zoom.If you want to become an active chess player and develop your philosophy and instincts, then her course is perfect for you. In this comprehensive course, Ms. Kiki will share her advanced tactics and favorite openings to you step by step. Ms. Kiki's online courses are very rich in content, organized and designed very carefully, and classroom interactions are also very good. Each class is full of knowledge points. My daughter has made great progress in the past eight months, and she likes playing chess more and more. I sincerely hope that KLC will continue to have online courses after the pandemic, so that family like us who are not in the Bay Area can continue to take Kiki's courses. We are very grateful for the hard work of the teachers.
My daughter has signed up one-on-one lesson with Ms. Kiki since early 2019. Before learning with Ms. Kiki, my daughter just couldn't seem to improve her chess, which really frustrated her. Ms. Kiki was able to figure out her weak points and designed an effective way to train both her techniques and mental toughness. Finally she was able to break through 1800 and qualified to be one of U14 team USA. Thank you, Ms. Kiki!
Miss Kiki and Mr Leo are absolutely the best! I really appreciate how these two coaches work with the kids. Seeing my daughter competing with other kids for chess points is lightening up my spirit every weekend. My daughter loves to play chess ... such a gift. Miss Kiki and Mr Leo are all about making it fun to compete, and learn all the basic and advanced strategies. Chess and King's Land Chess in particular are an amazing opportunity for the kids to have fun and learn, grow up to become responsible and independent teenagers.
My son has been learning chess with Ms.Kiki since he was 5 and half years old. He has made a very good progress in the past years. Ms.Kiki is nice, patient but also strict in chess learning. She helped my boy from one chess beginner became the top 1 player in USCF U8 section in 2018. She knows how to inspire kids in putting efforts to understand concepts and practice techniques. She always encourage kids enjoy to play chess and work harder to reach the goal. Positive attitudes, practice makes perfect......the wisdom for life. That is my kid learned more than chess. I really appreciated coach Kiki's hard word ,dedication and enthusiasm! Highly recommend.
My kids have been learning Chess from Ms. Kiki for almost a year. She is very patient and very professional. Kids love her the most among all their extracurricular teachers. She made the chess learning fun while using a very progressive system.
Classroom is clean with good setting. Multiple sessions to choose to fit people’s busy schedules. I recommend this place to all east bay families who want to learn Chess.

My kid has been taking zoom class with Ms Kiki for almost a year. The online class is well organized. She teaches systematically and pays attention to each kid on their progression. King land chess has free online tournament for students in their classes, which is very helpful for my kid.
I appreciate my friend, Carol, introducing King’s Land Chess to my family. My six years old daughter was inspired by her two years ago(she was about four and half years old) , and she really loves chess since then. Ms. Kiki is amazing teacher who changes mine and my daughter’s life in many different ways. She was only able to stay focus less than 5 minutes and now she is willing stay concentrated for about whole class. Not just for chess class, my daughter is able to accomplish many difficult task in school project and even in her learning situation. She understand how to solve and find the best way to deal with the problem and overcome when she get defeated. Ms. Kiki trained my daughter to think efficiently and actively, knowing the strategy to predict what your opponent will react and respond. As a parent, I even learn some content from the chess home work assignment(the homework is well design and clear what needs to be done) .And I really glad everytime that my daughter come to me and have a conversation with what she loves to talk about. Sharing her emotion and thought clearly is really make my life easier and happy. Thank you very much! Ms. Kiki.
During the pandemic all classes are online. Kids enjoyed the online class and 1hr passed very fast. Teacher/coach combined chess strategy study and chess quiz/game so kids didn’t feel bored. They offer multiple sessions for every level class which really provides flexibility for us.
We are grateful that my son's friend recommended Ms. KiKi when he just discovered chess and showed strong interest about half a year ago. First of all I praise her for her philosophy and approaches in leading the kids and parents to enjoy chess. Not only my son but also myself are much attracted to chess ever since. We do the homeworks together and play games together. I love the extra bonding I established with my son while learning chess with Ms. KiKi. She is well organized, calm, knowledgeable, experienced, well prepared for each lesson and makes very good use of time. Thank you Ms. KiKi and we are happy to have you in Tri-Valley. Please stay and do not move anywhere else!
My 7 year old boy start taking Coach KiKi’s session 3 months ago, he love it and can’t wait to continue next level session soon. Coach Kiki is very professional and great to everyone, her homework assignments are fun and challenging too! My son totally enjoyed and had been making progress. The classroom environment is also very nice. Highly recommended!
My 6 year old boy enjoys each class there very much. Going to chess class is the most expected thing he wants to do each week. Ms Kiki is a very professional instructor. She teaches children not only tactics, strategies to play chess but also how to enjoy playing chess. I highly recommend Ms Kiki to those children who want learn and also enjoy chess.
My six year old boy had played in the summer camp and has been going to Saturday meets for a while. He loves playing chess and always looks forward to each class and the end of season tournament. Coach Kiki not only teaches the kids how to play chess but also teaches them good sportsmanship by creating a stimulating learning environment and increasing the engagement in every training class. We cannot recommend the program highly enough.
My son has been taking chess classes with Ms. KiKi since the beginning of this year. I am very happy to see that with Ms. KiKi’s help, he has been improved so much, not only in his chess skills but also on his behavior. He can focus now on the instructions and when playing with an opponent, he can behave politely like a mature player😊. He likes Ms. Kiki’s teaching and his interest in chess is still growing. I highly recommend Ms. KiKi as an excellent chess coach!
After my elder son finished his introduction level chess class at KingsLanding, I enrolled my younger daughter into KingsLanding without hesitation. Ms. Kiki is a very good coach who can control the pace of the class. She makes sure every kid in the class is paying attention by using all kinds encouragement methods. This is not easy considering the kids are only 5 or 6 years. They have very short focus span like 5 to 10 minutes. In Ms. Kiki's 60-minute class, the kids were attracted by the games, the rule explanations, Q&A and getting points when they did good job. Kids have a high-quality 60-minutes class and they learn how to play Chess step by step. Absolutely recommend this.
This is one of the best extracurricular activities that we’ve signed our daughter up for. Not only are Mrs KiKi and Mr Leo extremely skilled at chess (growing up, she was the champion in China for her age group), but they are also very caring people and extremely good educators. The monthly shopping spree where the students get to spend their chess money (which they earn for doing their homework and paying attention in class) is a big hit with our daughter! I whole heartedly recommend this school for anyone whose kids are interested in getting better at chess.
My son loves chess and we are so lucky to find such a great instructor! Coach Kiki knows how to inspire her students by challenging them. In her chess class, my son learned not only the chess tactics, but also the positive attitudes. These guidences will be through his life far beyond the chess and impact him in many different ways when he grows up. We really appreciate coach Kiki’s hard work, dedication and enthusiasm! Highly recommend!
My son has been learning chess with Ms.Kiki since the beginning of this year. He has made a very good progress in the past 9 months. Ms.Kiki is nice, patient but also strict in chess learning. She knows how to inspire kids in putting efforts to understand concepts and practice techniques. Ms.Kiki will provide detailed structured study plan for each session ahead and assign well-designed and challenging homework to help kids better master the topics after each lesson. Kids will be awarded chess money if answer challenging questions, finish homework or win the in class games. There is also kids and parents bughouse tournament to help build up the family involvement. All the above approaches help kids love chess more and be willing to achieve better goal.
We started with Ms. Kiki more than a year ago and our kid is loving her and her lessons. She always spend time to focus on the specific needs of every child and give them special attention that help them to improve. She takes the time to talk to us and work with us to improve our child's skills. She also spend a lot of time ensuring that parents are involved to keep Chess a family interest.
My son really likes Miss Kiki. She really knows how to get her students engaged in learning chess. She suggests books based on each student's level and style. She is very responsive in her chess club forum (chat room). Her patience is one of the key factor that makes her a great chess teacher.
Btw, her basketball skill is also very impressive and professional.
Thank you Miss Kiki!

Thank you Miss Kiki!
such a good chess teacher, Miss KiKi help a lot children to learn and improve their skill, have fun in team players and also, keep children in order and better habits!
My daughter started learning chess four year ago. She initially took group lessons. A year later when her rating reached 800, she was fortunate to have Miss Kiki as her private coach. Miss Kiki is a great chess teacher. She knows how to work with kids and show them the fun of chess games. She loves kids but is also strict when needed. Her training class is well organized with topics and themes and is very effective. That one hour long weekly lessen was always joyful moment for my daughter. Miss Kiki’s private lessen stopped two years ago when she moved to Bay Area. While we have worked with a few other coaches since then, Miss Kiki is still the best in my daughter’s word.
My son is a zero-based student. We are very fortunate to have joined this big family. The founder of the club, Mrs. Kiki is top 1% of the American women's chess rankings, and has a lot of practical experience and more than ten years of teaching experience. They are eager to help every child who likes chess.
Ms Kiki is a very experienced chess teacher, Her class is both challenging and fun, my 5 years old son learned a lot in her classroom and more importantly, he enjoyed the learning a lot and now chess is one of his favorite activities. We feel very fortunate to have her as his chess teacher!
My daughter has taken one summer camp and 1 regular class sessions (about 3 months) so far at King's lane chess and she loves it. Mrs KiKi is not only a chess master herself also she knows how to work with kids. She opens the inquisitive minds of the kids and makes each class an adventure in chess land. She teaches chess skills with lots of examples and encourages students to think from different angels. After every class she has carefully designed homework which helps kids to get familiar with techniques they learned (Some homework is good exercise for parents too)
My daughter also loves Mr Leo. For homework done and questions answered on the class, kids will get chess money. After they have enough money, they could exchange to small gifts from Mr. Leo.
I could see not only the progress on my daughter but also the deep interest fostered by Mrs. KiKi. Definitely a go place for chess kids.

My daughter was a kindergartener and did not know how to play chess when she first came to King's Land Chess about 10 months ago, and she immediately fell in love with chess. Miss Kiki is very knowledgeable, passionate, and patient, and her lessons are fun and challenging. My daughter has made very good progress so far. Miss Kiki always encourages parents to learn and practice with the kids, I didn't know how to play chess before and now I enjoy playing chess with my daughter.
I am very fortunate to find Coach Kiki when my child starts to get into chess. She has a lot of experience that makes children to focus on her class. My child has learned a lot there, and we all like this coach very much.
My son has been here just for one month. However, he has a big improvement. Ms Kiki and Mr. Leo are so nice and patient.
My daughter started to learn chess with Miss Kiki 10 months ago. She’s strict and patient when teaching but very kind to kids. My daughter love Kiki so much.
I love the chess class! Coach Kiki is great! Here I not only learned chess techniques, but many other things like persistence, practice makes perfect...the wisdom for life!
Coach Kiki is a great teacher. Each class has both theory and practice sessions and kids are encouraged in a positive way.
Mrs. Kiki is a great teacher. With her skill and knowledge of teaching, my son really enjoys the chess lessons! Highly recommended!!
My son entered KLC one and a half year ago. He achieved a lot with the help from coach Ms Kiki and loves this game so much. He just scored 1612 (USCF rating) and was eligible for the U.S. National Team U8. Now he has a more ambitious goal and works hard towards it. I can’t imagine all of this without Ms Kiki.
My 7 years old girl started her first Chess class with Miss KiKi early this year and she has loved lessons so much since then! Each lesson is very well structured and Miss KiKi is an excellent teacher. She is very experienced to teach these young children how to play chess and love the game. Angela has made very good progress, is very passionate about going to lessons on Sundays and playing games at home with us. Would highly recommend the Club to everyone who is looking for a good place to learn chess!
Very Impressive. The classes are great for children from 5 years old to adults. Showing many types of chess moves and strategies by the instructors, and incentives for participation. I highly recommend the class for those who are willing and eager to learn and understand chess.
Miss Kiki is very experienced. My son enjoys a lot in her class. I‘m also impressed about her systematic teaching method.
