Complimentary Trial Class Before Enrollment

Welcome to King’s Land Chess! We’re excited to have you explore our programs and warmly invite all new students to enjoy one complimentary trial and assessment class before enrolling.

During the trial class, our coach will assess your child’s current skill level and may recommend a different class placement if needed. This evaluation helps us understand your child’s familiarity with piece movement, basic strategies, and overall game experience, ensuring they are placed in the class best suited to their learning needs.

Please let the coach know upon arrival that your child is attending a trial class.

How to Book a Trial Class

To ensure the best learning experience for every student, please review our Initial Self-Evaluation guidelines before registering for a trial class. If a student’s current chess level or rating does not meet the requirement for the selected trial class level, KLC may reschedule the trial class to a more appropriate level based on the student’s actual ability.

Trial classes take place during our regular group class schedule.

  1. Choose your preferred campus, class level, and date to register for a trial class.
  2. After completing registration, simply arrive at the selected class and inform the coach that your child is attending a trial session.
  3. During the lesson, our coach will observe and assess your child’s level and provide placement recommendations. The coaches may recommend a different placement to ensure the best learning experience.
Please note:
  • Each student is eligible for one complimentary trial class.
  • Returning students who require a level reassessment after a break should log in to their KLC account and register for a class; standard tuition rates will apply.
We look forward to meeting you and helping your child begin an exciting and rewarding chess journey with us!

Level 4 – Inter Two through Level 8 – Elite Group

Students with an established USCF rating (based on more than 25 rated games) may register for Level 4 through Level 8 Classes according to their current USCF rating level (not chess.com or Lichess online rating).

Class Level Promotion Guidelines

At King’s Land Chess, we follow a structured pathway to ensure every student develops the skills and knowledge needed for long-term success.

1. General Promotion Timeline
  • Students typically study in the same level for 2–3 semesters before moving up.
  • Students whose USCF established rating (over 25 games) meets the next level requirement may be promoted at any time.
  • Each level follows a multi-semester curriculum with new teaching materials and topics each session.
  • This approach ensures students fully master the skills required at every stage.

2. New Beginner Level
  • Students complete one semester at this level.
  • After that semester, all students are promoted to Entry Level.

3. Entry Level & Intermediate One Level
If a student is: unrated, has only a provisional rating (fewer than 25 USCF-rated games), or has an established rating (over 25 games) below the next level requirement,
  • They must complete at least 2 semesters before promotion.

4. Intermediate Two & Above Levels

(Intermediate Two, Advanced One, Advanced Two, Tournament Group, Elite Group)
  • Promotion is based on coach evaluation or meeting the USCF established rating requirement (over 25 games).
  • Coaches consider:
    • Class performance
    • Tournament results
    • Tactical skill level

5. USCF Ratings & Promotion Criteria
  • Provisional rating: Published after the first 4 USCF-rated games.
  • Established rating: Published after 25 USCF-rated games.
  • Promotion eligibility:
    • Achieve the next level’s USCF established rating requirement (based on at least 25 games), or
    • Pass the end-of-semester evaluation test.
